World Day of Dream: "I Dream" by Rui M.

talesforlove

I Dream

I Dream. With a bright day, round as the world,

with the seas bowing to the horizon,

with the dragonflies taken to the sea, taken by the wind,

that between tides it takes them to fly over the waters,

and me dreaming of dolphins that jump higher,

than memories, than distant mountains.

I Dream. With seaweed, that fraternally my feet involve,

like someone who embraces someone who is loved, as a calling,

and I Dream of dives in surface waters where

water music and Balearic sounds mix

with shrimp hormones and UV from the sun

in the colors of the corals ... that Dream of the day.

I surf these big Dreams ...

I Dream. With skies of hope, which are reflected in stones,

creations of art, insects, flying low, in Dreams,

and with black spiders hanging from precipices.

I Dream. With the warm air in the sky, soft as a burning life

and I hear footsteps on land, crackling, on grass,

my steps to the river,

where I get on a raft and paddle, paddle ...

I go on and on, among alders, undulating,

and splashes of cold, green water.

And finally, beyond the last corner of the river:

again the sea ... again to embrace somebody,

again we Dream…

Note: In a day of climate strike.

Enjoy.

interview... Paula Hawkins

talesforlove

During the Book Market Fair in Lisbon (2017) it was possible to interview Paula Hawkins. It was a very exciting experience and a privilege to speak with a writer with such a big success in thriller novels. Her answers were very important to us in order to better understand who is a writer and how life influences their work.

What does being a writer mean to you?

Writing is more a vocation than a profession: I’m lucky enough to be able to earn a living by doing it, but I think I would write – just as I always have written – even if I wasn’t published.  Since childhood I have relished making up stories: it took until I was in my thirties to find the confidence to show those stories to others, but the urge to create fiction has never left me.

Which season of your life do you think had the most influence on your writing?

Possibly my late teens/early twenties, which was the time at which I left Zimbabwe, where I grew up, and moved to London, where I live now. Those years were turbulent, and often lonely – I wrote a great deal at the time. At nineteen, I moved to Paris and lived there for a year. That was the first time I had lived alone, in a foreign city, speaking a language I struggled to master. It was lonely, again, but exciting too.

Is it possible for a writer to create their work without consideration for the feelings of the people around them?

I think perhaps it is possible, though I’m not sure that it should be. Writing is, for me, an exercise in empathy, in understanding others, in being able to place yourself in the position of another and imagine their thoughts and feelings. It would be strange then if while imagining the thoughts and feelings of fictional characters, one were to ignore the feelings of the real people in the society we live in.

Ghosts in the High Water

talesforlove

The tepid waters of the sea were embracing our feet and there we were, both of us laying on the sand. I lay over you, feeling the warm touch of your body, hearing the come and go of gentle waves brought by the tide. On the horizon, the sun softly touched the sand.
— Don't you feel sleepy?!
— Yes… I do.
The answer reflected reciprocity. My eyes were getting blurred as I was looking to the seashore.
I saw a boy dressed with ragged clothing of grey tone, walking on the strand towards us. I opened my eyes wider and saw him getting closer, step by step, and that didn't coincide with the rush of our days… But, the warm sense of peace and our presence there in an almost desert beach, near a city on a week day, also didn't go well with it, there only just 300 metres from the street, crowded with cars at rush hour.
— Hello... It's you.
I got puzzled.
