International Literary Contest “Poems and Short Fiction for Nature – 2015”

talesforlove

The forest breaths and as a result the planet Earth also breaths, giving us the oxigen that we need to live. During the Winter, in the north of the planet, where the majority of the dry land exists, many trees lose their leafs and the carbon dioxide increases in the atmosphere producing a small increase in global temperature. During the Spring and Summer all the trees of the planet grow leafes and they capture carbon dioxide making the weather lightly fresher than it would be without their action.

To tell you the truth the trees are pressious everywhere, even if they are alone in a grey street of a city or together with a small group of other in a beautiful artificial garden. To grow a tree is to grow a friend, it is an act of poetry and who knows of the tales that the sun beams crossing their branches can inspire.

All the insects of the world and all the animals don’t care about written poetry because they have the visual poetry of flowers in a bed and the colorful grace of reefs. They purely enjoy the beautiful gifts of life!

But, do you know that if the mean world sea temperature rises by 2 degrees celcious that would cause serious damage to reefs? And do you know that the big secret of dogs is their friendship and friendly approach towards us? Certainly, you feel that every living creature is Nature; we are Nature and we also deserve a poem… To protect flowers is to protect us.

Life is special and this is the reason why we invite you to submit your best poem or your perfect tale.

Ambrosia Chronicles: the Discovery. K. C. Simos. Athens, Greece: Kalendis Editions, 2013. 301 pp.

The History of the Book:
This book tells us the story of Alex, a young woman that studies at University. Nevertheless, her peaceful life, made of her struggle with school, friends, and body-imagery changes suddenly when some unexpected encounters take place. It is then that the supernatural grows stronger in her life... Additionally, the relationship between Alex and her two friends Ian and Lucas give to this YA fiction history a drop of romantic glamour. Also, it is clear to me that the author intentionally gives to the main character the sly with of observational humour and this detail gives us a piece of literature that has the freshness of a Summer during at the seashore! Certainly, it is to be read at a single sitting.

Social/Historical context:
This book was written at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century by K. C. Simos, a lady who had the experience of studying at Birmingham. The book is about a YA story that contains all the facts that a student experiencing the Erasmus program in Europe might experience, namely: the discovery of a new country, the challenge of living with other foreign students and the enriching experience of learning new cultures. Nevertheless, it is impossible to forget that the author is Greek and that means knowledge above average about Greek mythology and, fortunately, this is clear when we read this piece of literature.

Writing Style:
The book is written in the third and first person from the perspective of Alex a young female that studies at an University and have all the philosophical questions we have at that point of our lives. She is the heroine of this book. Despite of the fact that the book is sometimes a novel and other times a mystery book one aspect remains true: it is a book of adventure and discovery of the human nature and about our fears with a very consistent approach for its time and a simple language. Also, it does have a very relaxing pace except when the action is faster giving us a “can’t put down” strong feeling that only a good book can create.

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed the adventure! It was an adventure seasoned with some romance and mystery. Certainly, the book brings with it the freshness of the discovery we emotionally breath in when we are very young but also the possibility  of learning new exciting details about Greek mythology.
I really think this is a book also about the awakening into some of the secrets of the adult world but is also a good evocation of the narrow borders between mythology of Gods and the above average capabilities of the human like super heroes.
At the same time, all the revelations aren’t shocking but the result of a smooth path of discovery our heroine does when she can afford to rest during her breath taking adventure.
And, at the end, I find myself thinking, clearly with mingled feelings, that our life takes us by paths we couldn’t even dream about regardless all our efforts to control our insignificant future and present. To me the end of the story paves the way to books two and three bringing together the seed of a new adventure and an almost shocking reason to think about our own lives...
